LACRIMAL SAC PROBLEMS

The tears formed in the eyes are drained from eye to the nasal cavity. Any blockage in this pathway can lead to Stagnation of tears in the eye and this subsequently can lead to infection of the lacrimal sac known as dacryocystitis.

Symptoms

​

  1. Congenital dacryocystitis:  The child may have symptoms like watering or mucopurulent discharge from the eye

  2. Acute dacryocystitis: It may be associated with sudden onset of pain redness and swelling overlying lacrimal sac area and watering or discharge from the eye 

   3. Chronic dacryocystitis: It may be associated with long standing swelling in the region of lacrimal sac and recurrent episodes of watering or discharge from the eye.

Treatment

​

  • Congenital dacryocystitis: is treated with NLD massage and /or Probing and Syringing

  • Acute dacryocystitis: Needs systemic antibiotics and analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs

  • Chronic dacryocystitis: Needs Surgery Dacryocystorhinostomy +/- intubation
